SDI Act

Spatial Data Infrastructure Act, 2003 [Act No. 54, 2003]
The SDI Act was passed in South Africa in January 2004, while sections 1-11, 13 and 19-22 came into operation in May 2006. Sections 12 and 14-18 of the Act were promulgated in April 2015.
The Act applies to:
- Organs of state that hold spatial information;
- Users of spatial information.
The Act establishes:
- The South African Spatial Data Infrastructure (SASDI);
- The Committee for Spatial Information (CSI);
- An Electronic Metadata Catalogue (EMC).
The Act provides for:
- The determination of standards and prescriptions to facilitate the sharing of spatial information
- The avoidance of duplication in data capture;
- The capture and publishing of metadata.
